Met Cancels John Galliano Exhibition

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has canceled its planned Spring 2026 exhibition dedicated to designer John Galliano. The decision follows widespread backlash over Galliano's 2011 racist remarks.

The museum announced the cancellation in a joint statement with Galliano, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and Met Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton. The statement said they had decided not to proceed with the exhibition after thoughtful discussions.

Galliano's Apology

John Galliano issued an extended personal statement. He expressed sadness over the decision and said that after reflection and discussion, he had decided it was best for the exhibition not to take place at this time. He directly addressed his past actions, stating he remains fully accountable for the pain caused by his words in the past, particularly the hurt he caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and that he remains deeply sorry for it.

The controversy stems from a 2011 incident. A video surfaced showing Galliano making racist and antisemitic remarks in a Paris cafe. He was fired from his role as Creative Director at Dior and ousted from his own label. A French court convicted him on charges of public insults and fined him 6,000 euros.

Industry Reactions

Curator Andrew Bolton supported the cancellation. He acknowledged the museum's complex role, stating he believes deeply in the responsibility of museums to examine difficult histories with rigor, candor, and care. He also recognized the pain and concern this exhibition has caused and said he supports the decision not to proceed after extensive discussion.

Anna Wintour, the chairperson of the Met Gala, also commented. She framed Galliano's agreement to cancel as a personal choice, calling his decision very courageous and a measure of the man he is. She said she believes this is the right decision and that both he and the Museum have her full support.

Galliano's Career Path

Galliano's career has followed a turbulent path since the 2011 scandal. He returned to the fashion industry in 2014 when he was appointed Creative Director of Maison Margiela. His work there has been critically acclaimed. Most recently, in 2026, he signed a deal with high-street retailer Zara for a collaborative collection.

The exhibition, titled John Galliano: Horizons, was announced by The Met Costume Institute in July. Public criticism mounted quickly. The museum has not announced a replacement focus for its Spring 2026 show.
