JOURNAL STANDARD relume Reworks Barbour

JOURNAL STANDARD relume has released a special-order jacket that reworks the Barbour Solway Zipper. The collaboration, dubbed the Solway Zipper Modify, is available to pre-order now and arrives in Black, Natural, and Khaki.

Rather than a simple reissue, the project targets three specific areas of the original jacket's construction. The goal is to adapt the archive piece for daily city wear. The most significant change is to the fabric.

Fabric and Construction Overhaul

The original waxed cotton shell has been completely replaced. JOURNAL STANDARD relume has swapped it for a non-oiled cotton-nylon blend. This high-density weave is designed to feel lighter on the body and avoids the tacky feel of a traditional oiled finish.

This material shift has practical benefits for urban life. The jacket can be worn on a packed train or in a car seat without the maintenance concerns or potential wax transfer associated with waxed cotton. The outer fabric is a mix of 75% cotton and 25% nylon, with a full cotton lining and a cotton collar.

A Revised Silhouette for Layering

The second major focus was the cut. The collaboration drops the original jacket's longer line and its signature waist belt. In their place is a resized, mid-length silhouette that is intended to sit just past the hip.

This creates a looser proportion built specifically for layering. The design clears enough room to sit comfortably over a thick knit without pulling. The shorter hem is also intended to stay out of the way when the wearer is seated. These changes reframe the Solway Zipper as an everyday outer layer rather than a structured countryside coat.

New Adjustable Feature

The third key addition is a functional one: a hem drawcord. Cinching this cord at the base of the jacket pulls the silhouette into a rounder, more contemporary shape. It gives the wearer direct control over how boxy or tapered the jacket fits. Combined, these three modifications shift the piece toward a relaxed and adjustable fit.

Despite the overhaul, several heritage details from the Barbour original have been preserved. The functional pocket layout remains, including a left-chest flap pocket and roomy gusseted pockets at the front. The corduroy collar can still be fastened with a chin strap to stand up when needed. The classic house-check lining is visible at the cuff when the sleeves are rolled.

Finish details separate the three available colorways. The Black version uses a matching black collar for a cleaner urban look. Natural pairs a camel-colored collar with the check lining in a lighter palette. The Khaki option sets a brown collar against a classic sage green body.
