Sandy Liang Releases First Rizzoli Monograph

Sandy Liang is releasing her first monograph, 'Dressing Up: Sandy Liang,' through Rizzoli New York. The 276-page hardcover book arrives on September 22.

According to the announcement, the publication compiles ten years of the designer's visual world. It leans on previously unpublished personal film and iPhone photographs from Liang's archive. The book pulls from this material for an inside look at the designer's creative archive.

A Personal Visual Archive

The book is framed as an intimate scrapbook rather than a conventional lookbook. It traces runway moments, inspirations, and the designer's evolving ideas around uniform dressing. Liang stated that documenting her life through photos has always felt intuitive. She said holding memories through photos has always felt as precious as keeping a childhood memento.

"I've been documenting my life through photos since high school when I got my first iPhone," Liang said. "Sharing my life through my work feels intuitive for me one does not feel complete without the other."

Defining a Nostalgic Universe

The visual language cataloged will be familiar to followers of the label. Liang's collections are known for bows, Peter Pan collars, pleated skirts, and ballet references. Her work fuses a downtown New York attitude with nostalgia and youth culture. The label's visual world also includes florals and kawaii touches, fusing cues pulled from memory.

A native New Yorker, Liang's designs draw heavily on her upbringing in Chinatown. This blend of femininity and intergenerational influence has garnered a devoted global following. The monograph is positioned as both a personal archive and a broader statement on her place in contemporary fashion.

Collaborative Contributions

The monograph features contributions from two key collaborators. Creative director Ava Nirui, known for her work on Heaven by Marc Jacobs, contributed to the project. Stylist Dean DiCriscio, who splits his time between New York and Los Angeles, also contributed.

Beyond documenting a decade, the project is described as an invitation. It aims to encourage those interested in fashion, image-making and dressing up to build their own visual worlds.
