London's All Points East Outbreak Festival celebrated 15 years with diverse, multi-generational alternative fashion, moving past classic metalhead styles.
The Deftones headlined the 15th anniversary Outbreak Festival at London's All Points East in Victoria Park on August 28, 2026. The event, documented by photographer Tom Marshak for Dazed, brought together digitally obsessed Gen-Z fans and scene veterans, shattering legacy style stereotypes.
For years, the metal-head archetype was heavily gatekept and visually homogenous. The aesthetic of cargo shorts, tube socks, and stacks of faded festival wristbands had come to define the scene. Outbreak's return served as a noisy reminder of just how multi-dimensional the scene's style has become.
The Evolving Uniform
Despite rapid online trend cycles since the pandemic, one item connects past and present subcultures: the black platform boot. It is the scene's answer to the little black dress. The sky is the limit for fan fashion, however. Festival-goers used a canvas of band tees and combat boots. They adorned them with faded mullets, self-deprecating slogans, and pastel warpaint. Human-sized butterfly wings and more tattoos than ever were also on display.
Today, you can no longer guess the bands at Outbreak based purely on what people are wearing. The festival crowd posed a broader question: what does an alternative metal fan actually look like in 2026?
A Festival's Journey
Originating at Sheffield's Broomhall Centre in 2011, Outbreak moved to Leeds in 2012. It relocated to Manchester in 2022 before finally coming under the All Points East banner in 2026 for its own dedicated day. The Deftones' modern-day renaissance has spearheaded a massive subcultural pivot. This was driven by a post-COVID online surge that introduced their back catalogue to an obsessively devoted Gen-Z audience.
Attendees saw performances from a wide range of acts. The lineup included Amyl and the Sniffers, Salem, and Show Me the Body. Mannequin Pussy, EsDeeKid, and JPEGMAFIA also played. They were joined by post-hardcore fan-favourites Basement and horror-punk turned alternative-rock legends AFI.
Platforming Fan Cultures
To the dismay of gatekeepers, heavy music is firmly on the menu. Festivals like Outbreak ensure that a vast array of fan cultures are finally being platformed on a global stage. Many of these cultures were forged in digital spaces. The outcome was a celebration of the music that unites two generations of heavy music style sets on a dusty field in London.
