LUAR and Lunazul Tequila Launch Moonlit Capsule Collection
Designer Raul Lopez unveils a limited LUAR x Lunazul Tequila capsule, centered on agave leather, ahead of its NYFW SS27 show debut.

Designer Raul Lopez has detailed the LUAR x Lunazul Tequila capsule collection in an exclusive interview with Hypebeast. The highly-limited range, which will debut at LUAR's SS27 runway show on September 14 during New York Fashion Week, is built around an innovative agave leather textile.
The Agave Leather Innovation
The collection's unifying material is a vegan leather derived from the agave plant. Lopez visited an agave farm to understand the material's journey from seed to sewing machine. "It gave me a lot of insight into what these agave plants can actually create, not only tequila, but other sustainable materials," he said. The designer described the process of transforming the iconic plant into a wearable textile as incredible.
This plant-based leather serves as a tangible link between the craftsmanship of tequila production and fashion design. Lopez reflected on the shared philosophy, noting that careful, often overlooked details are central to both brands. The material features Lunazul's signature blue hue, a color tied to the collaborative theme.
Nocturnal New York Inspiration
Lopez framed the capsule as an everyday uniform heavily inspired by 1990s New York City hip-hop culture. "It couldn't get more New York! The hat, the jean jacket, the shorts, and the bag," he explained. The silhouettes follow an easy-but-raise approach, leaning into a nocturnal mood with deep black denim and accents of blue.
The color scheme is intentionally symbolic. "The all-black elements represent the dark, and the hits of blue represent how the moon stands out in the sky," Lopez stated. He emphasized that New York nightlife is a core inspiration for LUAR. Similarly, Lunazul tequila is presented as a staple of after-hours celebrations, creating a natural partnership.
Shared Heritage and Craft
The collaboration is rooted in a shared etymology and cultural perspective. Lopez noted that 'Lunazul' translates to 'blue moon' in Spanish, while 'Luar' means 'moonlight' in Galician and Portuguese. "The moon brings people together," he mused. "We both have a sense of community, ritual, gathering, and culture."
Lopez drew a parallel between cultivating his brand and growing agave, suggesting both require dedicated nourishment over time. He has been building LUAR since 2011. The capsule collection represents the fusion of these two crafts, bound by a commitment to detailed creative process.
The collection includes a two-piece jacket-and-shorts set and a basketball-shaped handbag. Lopez confidently linked the partnership to his personal taste, stating, "I drink tequila. It's my go-to."
